Hydrogen is considered a very clean fuel. The efficient production of hydrogen is the goal of the research team.
As part of the Energy Lab 2.0, a plant for PEM electrolysis, a form of hydrogen electrolysis, is being built at the Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Hydrogen - also known as H2 - is a sustainable energy carrier whose use produces water vapour, i.e. H2O, rather than greenhouse gases. However, the extraction of hydrogen can require an increased amount of energy, so the researchers are scaling up powerful, innovative cell components to optimise hydrogen extraction in the future. Thus, an efficiency level of over 70% in dynamic interconnected operation is to be achieved at the PEM plant in Jülich.
